"It was almost as if the members of Pink Floyd made music that goes well with vodka" quips the character of Ryan in Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone.
Any true blooded Floyd fan worth his grain of salt knows that this is absolutely true.
So a little story about Floyd. The band started off in 1964. Those were the days that mankind was at its creative best, the United States was planning a manned mission to the moon and one Cambrige student - Roger Waters left his architectural studies to join a band called Sigma 6.
The band evolved from a jazzy sound to more psychedelic rock and the name changed with the style - The Tea Set, The Abdabs, The Screaming Abdabs to finally The Pink Floyd Sound, which eventually shortened to Pink Floyd.
So what makes their story so prolific as against the multitude of rock bands spawning and breaking in those days? The difference was one gentleman who joined the band in the summer of 1965 - Syd Barrett. With him at lead vocals and guitar, the band went through an evolution which made their sound more mature. Barret was considered to be a creative God of his times.
The band members were getting along perfectly and the band was doing a LOT of tours, including one with Jimi Hendrix.
All this, sadly, was not to last...
